The Tookish Tag | I Steal A Tag And Fangirl

Mae g’ovannen, mellon nîn! For those of you who don’t speak Elvish – well met, my friend! Recently I realized I should post more on this blog, and that I should catch up on some tags as well. So what better way to start off with The Tookish Tag! As far as I could find, no one’s actually tagged me for this… so I’m unofficially stealing it from Deborah and Sarah, both of whom said I should do it, so I guess it’s not exactly stealing. 😉 So let’s get started!

Rules

  • Tag some of your own fellow Tolkienknights!

The Questions

1. How were you first introduced to LotR/TH and was it love at first sight/read?

My dad read them to me when I was little, but to be honest, I didn’t remember very much until I decided to read them on my own last summer. When I was reading the Hobbit, I came across a few spots that I remembered (the scene in the tunnels with Gollum, Mirkwood, and when Bilbo first went into the mountain and saw Smaug), but the Lord of the Rings was mostly new to me. And oh yes, it was love at first sight. 😉

2. If you could meet the actors who portray the characters in the movies, would you?

Oh yes, of course!!!

3. What is your favorite credit song from LotR/TH?

I’m going to sort-of cheat here and say that my favoritest Lord of the Rings song is Peter Hollens’ a cappella version of In Dreams. It’s soooo awesome (not to mention how cool the video is).

4. The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit – which is your favorite?  *evil laugh*  (And no, you don’t actually have to decide.  I’m merciful like that. *magnanimous smile*)

Mmm, that’s actually easy. The Lord of the Rings. Just because there’s more of it, and while I love The Hobbit, it’s hard to beat Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, Pippin, Frodo, Sam…

5. Who is your favorite all-around character?

The toughest question of them all? Yes, yes it is. I love so many characters – Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas… But I have to go with the unusual choice, and the one I didn’t think would be one of my favorites – Gimli.

First of all, note that I’m speaking of the Gimli of the books, since I’m still not sure of my thoughts on Gimli of the movies. 😉 Gimli’s just awesome. He’s stubborn, but he has a big heart and compassion for The Hobbits. Let’s be honest, the whole thing with him and Galadriel? Hilarious! He goes from absolutely distrusting her to making her the standard of highest beauty. That stimulates another awesome moment in his whole conflict with Eomer. He’s also so in love with caves and mountains, and his friendship with Legolas is awesome. And after the battle of Helm’s Deep, he’s injured, and yet he still goes straight to Legolas to find out who won their little contest. XD Those are just a few of the reasons that I really like Gimli.

6. What is your opinion on Boromir?

In my first time reading the books, I really didn’t like him at all, although his ending was a little redeeming. But the movies made him much more heroic, and so… he’s okay. Not as awesome as Faramir, but okay. 😉

7. How many times have you watched the movies/read the books?

I’ve watched through the movies (extended editions) once, and I’ve read both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings once, but I’m currently rereading LotR.

8. What book is your favorite?

Mmm… I think I’d have to say Two Towers, because of the Ents, and Merry and Pippin’s awesomeness, and also Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli’s awesomeness.

9. Who is your favorite female character (other than your answer to question #5)?

Arwen, I believe – but in the books. In the movies, probably Galadriel. Before reading the appendices, I would have said Galadriel for sure, but then I realized all that Arwen gave up to stay with Aragorn, and… *sniff*

10. Who is your favorite male character (other than your answer to question #5)?

Argh, this question!!!! I feel like Legolas is my second favorite – because he’s hilarious. And an elf. XD The scene at Caradhras? His challenge to Eomer when he threatens Gimli? Challenging Gimli’s kill count at Helm’s Deep? His attraction to the creepy trees after that battle? His friendship with Gimli in general? And… well, that’s as far as I’ve gotten in my reread. But that’s just the book! I have to say, that Legolas and the Oliphaunt scene in Return of the King was really, really cool. 😉 So I guess I’d have to say Legolas, although Gandalf and Aragorn are close behind.

11. Which of the movies, in your opinion, has the best ending?

Ah… interesting question. It’s very hard to say, but… well, no, it’s not. My favorite ending is definitely the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. That’s because I like beginnings more than endings. The end of FotR is sad, but it’s also a motivation for our characters, and we get the feeling that they’re embarking on an even greater adventure!

12. (I’m adding this question, because I couldn’t help it!) Which hobbit is your favorite?

It’s so hard to choose between the five main hobbits: Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. They’re all so wonderful in their own ways… But I think I would have to say Pippin. As Gandalf calls him, this “tom-fool of a Took” is both hilarious and awesome. And he’s somehow weaseled his way into my favorite characters. 😉

So, there you have it, my friends! The Tookish Tag! As for who to tag… well, anyone who wants to do it that hasn’t done it! 😉 But, since I do want to tag some people, I’ll tag Gabrielle (I know you like LotR, and you haven’t done it), Rivka Ray and Sierra @ 26countlesspossibilities (I know Rivka has LotR experience, but I didn’t see if Sierra does… but you’re both tagged! 🙂 ), and anyone else! 🙂

Do you have a tag you want me to do, or that you’ve tagged me for already? Post it down in the comments, so I’ll remember!

    1. Thank you! I think he’s a really underappreciated character – mostly because he’s not as good-looking as Legolas… 😉
Go ahead! I would’ve tagged you if I’d realized you hadn’t done it! 🙂

  1. Gimli’s an interesting answer to favorite character . . . I know there aren’t a lot of people who’d say the same. (I like him, but he’s not my favorite either . . .)
I do like what you said about liking beginnings more than endings.

    1. I kind of couldn’t decide, and since he’s underappreciated and definitely in my top favorite characters, I went with him. 😉 I wouldn’t say he’s my absolute favorite, but that’s just because I love them all.
Yeah, that’s kind of my thing – I hate it when things end.

  2. While I know only the reference of what my dad’s told me and a few movie clips of this…. I must say that Pippin is adorable. 🙂 ❤ *sends hugs to him from my non-fandom treehouse* *and an invitation to come over for for cookies*
I'm pretty positive he'll steal my heart about 500% more if I ever read/watch it. So, yeah. You'll definitely know about it if that day comes. 😛

      1. Aww, I bet. 🙂 I just have this huge soft spot for ESFP characters. Being the youngest always helps, too. XD
A picture of movie Pippin actually caught my eye because his nose looks almost exactly like mine. it’s a bit of a puzzle in our family because I’m the only one with that nose. 😛

        Liked by 1 person

      2. *grins* It’s because he’s awesome, that’s why. 😉
That’s odd! I was having trouble telling him and Merry apart, so I just remembered that Pippin was the one with the long face and Merry was the one with the odd jaw. 😛

        Liked by 1 person

      3. That’s it. Tell Pippin he’s coming to my treehouse. And to bring Merry. XD
Huh. Yeah, sometimes the super close pairs get their names mixed up. 😛 It’s funny, cuz Pippin sorta looks like me and Merry looks a lot like Peter. Though there’s a lot bigger age gap… 😛
Merry’s jaw is kind of strange. Almost off to the side and jutting out…

        Liked by 1 person

      4. XD Yup! You’re probably related somehow…
Right? They also look pretty similar – you can’t tell them apart by hair color or height or size or anything. That’s funny!
RIGHT??? That’s what I was thinking!!!

      5. Probably. XD I bet I could find some distant Took cousins if I looked. Or maybe I’m adopted! *gasp* *mutters* So that’s why I’m shorter than everyone else…
It’s weird because the actor doesn’t quite have the same jaw angle all the time. Maybe it was something he took on for the character?

        Liked by 1 person

      6. XDDD You’re part hobbit!!!! I doubt you’re actually adopted, though… maybe you just earned a distant strain of hobbit blood. 😉
Hm, I don’t know. Maybe they did that on purpose so we could tell them apart!!! O.O

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Ah, yes! Of course! Everything falls into place now. The out of place curly hair… the shortness… my nose… why I love going barefoot… *wide eyes* *slow nod* my life makes so much more sense now. XDDD
Oh! O.O yeah, that’s probably it, actually.

      8. OH MY. THERE’S A HOBBIT NAMED ROSIE? :O
Well, mystery of my life solved. I’m a hobbit. Why didn’t anyone tell me before? *packs a backpack* Well, I’m off to the Shire. Wanna come? XD

        Liked by 1 person

      9. Yes, totally! Maybe you were cast out after a mix up with the hobbits. XD
Righto! *hitches up my backpack* Off to Middle Earth to join my hobbit brethren! 😀 You’ll have to help me find the elves for you. 😛

      10. Oh, I think you’re right! Or maybe I was shunned because I was actually part hobbit, part elf… XD
Will do! I think I’m most likely part Sindarin, so Mirkwood… but maybe Lothlorien… *goes off humming*

        Liked by 1 person

      11. Aha! We’ve solved the mystery of your life as well, now. 😉
I see… *pulls out map* *follows you* Maybe we can work out some hobbit-elf alliance once we get there! 😀

And Sierra hasn’t read or watched LotR, but you are most welcome to pester her about it 😉

  4. Wow!! SO AWESOME!!!
My name’s Celandiya — Rosey sent me your way; I’ve read one of your posts, and I’M IN LOVE!!! : )
I’m such a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan!! I’ve read the books 5 times apiece, and “The Hobbit” 6 times. And I’ve read the Silmarillion 1 1/2 times, and I’ve watched the “LotR” movies 11 times, and “The Hobbit” movies 2 times. Not to mention Tolkien’s short stories, with Tom Bombadil! 🙂
My favorite elf is hhmmmm… well, this is so hard. I don’t know… oh yeah, that cute one– what’s his name?? Oh! Legolas! Yeah (how did you know that was coming?!? XP) jk
My favorite man is Faramir. Is there even a question?
My favorite hobbit is Smeagol. Think about it… No? ok… Never mind. ; P
My favorite “hobbit” is Sam. I love Sean Astin– He’s so cute. (and Pippin… I melt into a little puddle everytime I hear him sing in “The Return of the King.” He has the most beautiful male’s voice I’ve EVER heard!) Btw, the actor for that character, Billy Boyd, actually has a band in the UK. : ) I LOVE Gaelic rock! : )
My favorite female is Eowyn. I too, fear “being in a cage,” staying at home, helpless while my men ride off into battle. : )
I actually started writing a continuation story of the Lord of the Rings which is Sam and Frodo’s descendants, Bolgo and Sagron, who “come of age” and set off on an adventure… Never finished it, though… : )

    1. That’s so awesome!!!! You sound like a hard-core Tolkien fan! 😉 I can’t believe you’ve read LotR 5 times!
That story sounds really cool! If you ever finish it, I’d love to read it! I love fanfiction, but it’s hard to find good ones, especially clean ones. 😀 Thanks for checking out my blog (and you have an awesome name)!

      1. Awww… thank you!!! (PS Celandiya’s just my comp name, but I like my friends to call me that. And I have a given nickname “Mousey” because I am CRAZY about grilled cheese sandwiches!) : ) I’ll have to finish my story — I just need encouragement and an accountability partner! : P Yeah, I read it the first time when I was 9, then twice more, then again when I had a rather crushing heartbreak. I read almost the whole trilogy in 4 days!! So, I take it back! You were right not to believe me that I read it 5; I’ve only read it 4 times. lol XD
Oh, yes! I even started an LotR fan club, but I didn’t have any friends who were as serious about it as I was who were willing to putting time into a club. So it kinda bottomed out, but I had big plans… An LotR quartlerly newsletter, interviews with the actors, pictures, contests, awards, Tolkienic poetry, fanfiction, LotR trivia quizzes, EVERYTHING!!! But I just didn’t have anyone who was obsessed as I was. So I eventually lost interest. *sigh* *the story of my life* But I did send an interview to Viggo Mortensen! (not that he responded!) : (
But yes, I’m a Whovian, a Tolkien freak, a CS Lewis fan, and a BIG-TIME Princess Bride follower!!
So, if you don’t mind my asking, what state do you live in? : ) Or do you live in another country? I’m from NC. Correction — I’m in NC, but I’m originally from TN. Big difference!! lol XD

      2. That’s so awesome!!!! A LotR fan club??? I would totally join that. 😉 I have maybe one friend who likes LotR a lot, but it’s been a while since she read it. *sigh*
Yes for Princess Bride!!! 😀 That movie (and book!) were really funny! 😉
I’m in Texas. 😀 Born and raised here, and never lived anywhere else!

  5. Oh, that is SO cool!!!
If Texas ever secedes, you better believe I’m gonna come like a shot! I’ve never been to Texas, but I compete in the National Bible Bee, and I’m hoping to make Nationals, as this will be my last year, and Nationals will be held in San Antonio, TX. I would love to go to TX, and that would make a great excuse!! lol 😀
Hey, if you wanna, maybe we can start trying to put the club back together. I still have all the rules laid out, and membership papers, and all that stuff I typed up, so excited about! Its been just sitting there for a year, and I’ve started to erase all the material several times. I even have a cute logo. Its a simple little hobbit door that opens, and you look through it and see a path wandering away between two hills, and a tree is on the left hill, with a little cloud a little to the left of it — really cute.
I know another girl who’s into it more than I am, if that’s possible, and she has a blog, but she just started it, and I can’t remember what its called, but maybe with the three of us, we can get something started with it! ;D
We could just email out the newsletters instead of mailing– much too expensive! 🙂 Whaddyathink? XD

    1. That’s cool! I don’t know if Texas will really secede… 😛 I did a spelling bee once, and it was pretty fun! I got third place. 😀
That might be fun! I do have a lot going on at the moment (senior year graduation/college stuff), but I’ll definitely think about it! That logo sounds awesome, btw. 😀

  6. PS you should put “pedo mellon a minno” on your blog header! : )
How many friends can a girl have who actually SPEAK elvish?? That’s so awesome. You’re the only person I’ver ever said “mellon” to that they didn’t ask me if I’m some Yankee from the North trying to buy a cantaloupe or watermelon. lol XD
Do you write Elvin, too? I can write in the Dwarven runes, but I’m still figuring out the Elvin script! lol

    Liked by 1 person

    1. XD I don’t know much, but I know “mellon,” and I’m guessing that phrase is “Speak, friend, and enter,” right? 😀
Right??? It’s so much fun! Yeah, my grandpa calls cantaloupe melon, so that would be confusing.
Not very well, but I’m okay at it if I have a key next to me telling me which letter is which. It’s fun! I haven’t tried anything Dwarven yet.

      Like

      1. Awesome! Ok, you’re the ONLY person I know who actually can write in Elvin! lol
Do you write Sindarin or Quenyan? I have a pronunciation guide to both, and they’re slightly different, but I can’t refer to it now ’cause I let a friend borrow it! lol
And, wow! Yes, you got the phrase right, as well. At the Mines of Moria, the Dwarven doors were inscripted with that saying.
You’re so awesome! We definitely need to get to know one another better! : )
PS (Trivia bit that you probably already knew — “mellon” is pronounced “me” as in mesh, and “llon” as in salon.)
And another trivia bit: do you know who Shelob’s descendant’s are?
And — do you know who Sauron’s master is (was)?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I usually do Sindarin. 😀
That’s what I thought! It sounded familiar. 😉
I did know that! I had to watch a video on pronunciation. 😉 It was very helpful.
Yup!!! If I remember right, the spiders in Mirkwood that Bilbo fought were her descendants! 😀
And… Urgh, I think it was Melkor? I’ve heard it before, and I know it started with an M…

      3. I suppose credit goes where credit is due — THANK YOU, ROSEY, for hooking us up!!!! : ) lol
Bri is SO amazing! (not to mention that that is the name of a town in the Shire)

PS Please tell your husband, Sam, that I love him dearly, and have had a crush on him for 2 years. *inwardly laughing wickedly*

        Liked by 1 person

  7. Yes! Melkor or Morgoth — Sauron was his lieutenant! 😀 He was one of the Valar, and then got cast out of the land of Arda because of his rebellion to Illuvatar, the one, omnipotent “God,” the Creator of the Universe (of Middle-Earth)?

(Well, technically, the Bri in LotR was spelled Bree, but its still cool!) Are you a CS Lewis fan, as well? 🙂

    Pop quiz:
1: The word “Balrog” is an Elvish word — is it Sindarin or Quenyan?
    What does it mean?
2: What is “let it be” in Elvish, the words spoken by Illuvatar after He spoke the world into existence?
    3: Who was Elrond’s great-grandfather?
4: Name 3 of the Valar:
5: Who is the mother of Shelob?

    Extra Credit:
Who destroyed Shelob’s mother? (pg. 81 of the “Silmarillion: Second Edition”)

PS Feel free to use Wikipedia or something. I only knew the answers to three of these without referring to the Silmarillion. I just thought it might be fun! XD I just LOVE giving people pop quizzes! 😉

    1. Yup, I remember reading that! 😉 Morgoth/Melkor was the one Beren and Luthien stole the Silmaril from, if I remember right…
Yup! C.S. Lewis is one of my faves, but I’ve only read the Chronicles of Narnia (several times) and some small chunks of The Screwtape Letters.
May it be known that I have no clue for any of these, except #3.
      1. Guessing Quenyan… But looking it up I see Sindarin… and it means Demon of Might. 🙂
      2. No clue.
      3. I’m guessing Beren? I don’t quite remember. I’m sure he has several different great-grandfathers… 😉
      4. Melkor (the fallen one), Aule (the one who created the dwarves, I know this one without the internet!), and Manwe (looked that one up, but recognized it then).
      5. Ungoliant? That’s the dreadful spider that Melkor came back with, I remember…
I don’t have (and haven’t read) the Silmarillion…. So I’ll make a random guess and say… Faramir. Or Gimli. Or a later hobbit. 😀

      Like

      1. PS Oh, that’s cool! 🙂 Yeah, I’ve read the Screwtape Letters, also. 1 1/2 times. Same as the Silmarillion! haha Do you ever read any of Frank Peretti’s stuff? I love his “Piercing the Darkness.”
Wow, you did pretty good! 😉
And yes, Beren and Luthien stole the Silmaril from Morgoth on his very throne. That was when Beren got his hand bitten off by the Warg or something… Some wolf-like creature! haha XD

You got 1, 4, and 5 right!! Congratulations!! (you didn’t even try for the extra credit — and that was a trick question! I was hoping to CATCH YOU IN MY SNARES *trying to leave a very obvious hint here* :O Sure you don’t want to try to answer it? If not, I’ll give you the answer… 🙂

        2. “Let It Be” in Elvish is “Ea”. Those two letters. That’s it!! 🙂 Except I think the “a” has two little dots over it, or something! XD
        3. Well, I actually had a family tree I was referring to in the back of the Silmarillion, and according to it, the great-grandfather I was referring to was Fingolfin. At least, we know he was descended from Fingolfin! 😀 haha

Let me know about that extra credit question! I could write you a whole page on that answer!! 🙂 lol
(Of course, I won’t make it too long, ’cause I’m sure you really sick of my leaving these really long comments on you blog, anyway! haha

      2. I’ll take the answer to the extra credit question. 😉
        2. Never would’ve gotten it!!! 😉
        3. I figured if it wasn’t Beren, it would be someone whose name started with an F, because, tbh, most of the old elves had F names. 😉 I remember that from Children of Hurin.

  8. Okay, the answer to who killed Ungoliant was “Ungoliant herself.” It was a trick question because after she sucked the sap out of the trees of Valinor, she became lustful of everything, and no matter how much she ate or had of anything, she always wanted more of it. She was never satisfied. She just got bigger and bigger, devouring more and more until even Melkor (Morgoth, whicever. Better yet, Mr. M XD) himself was afraid of Ungoliant. She demanded that he give her the Silmarils to devour, but he would not part with them, so she attacked him. He cried out in anguish, and the Balrogs (demons of might, as we previously learned 😉 ) came out and rescued him, and Ungoliant BARELY ESCAPED WITH HER LIFE!! This is where most people think she got killed. But later on, she became so lustful, she actually devoured herself!

    Any questions, class??? (jk)XD

So, I’m just gonna prepare myself this year for that, and maybe get a job to set money back…
